Captain Matt Claybaugh, PhD: Ocean Skills Director
“I believe that young men thrive in a community built on personal challenge and high expectations. Seven Seas is designed to foster a high degree of personal responsibility, discipline, and reflection that builds upon the innate resiliency and potential of each participant.”
For 19 years Dr. Claybaugh worked his way up the ranks of the Marimed Foundation where he has assumed the role of president and CEO in January 2002. Marimed is a residential treatment program that serves at risk adolescent males for the state of Hawaii. During this time he has lead the development of the program’s experiential treatment model, which includes voyages at sea.
Dr. Claybaugh previously worked as a Hawai`i public school teacher and as a lecturer at the University of Hawai`i-Mānoa. His dissertation was inspired by his experience at Marimed in the early 1990s and titled: “The Sea-Change in American Sea Narratives: An Experiential Perspective”. It explored the intersection of autobiographical literature and theories of experiential growth as represented in narratives by American seafarers past and present.
Dr. Claybaugh is also associated with Tall Ships America, The Association for Experiential Education, and various research groups. He has served as President of the Hawai`i Youth Services Network, and is currently President Elect of the Kāne`ohe Business Group, and Board Member of The University Laboratory School. The father of three boys, he enjoys many ocean activities and coaching youth sports.
